The Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) Chapter will explore the role that LDES plays in the energy transition and the main challenges that it faces. We will discuss the most promising technological developments to identify remaining innovation gaps and the policy tools needed to accelerate LDES deployment. Finally, the chapter will explore opportunities to turn old infrastructure into new storage plants and the role that storage will play in decarbonizing the heat sector.
